A recent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee voted on Tuesday to ban the use of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra (sildenafil) from South Africa.
The recommendation is based on findings from a study that showed Viagra, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug, has been linked to heart attacks and strokes.
A second advisory panel, composed of five health-care professionals from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and five members of the public in the advisory committee, recommended against the use of the drug.
The committee voted 4-2 in favor of the ban, saying that it had not been shown to have the desired effect.
The committee also recommended against the use of the drug by the public, noting that evidence on the risk of heart attack, stroke, and liver damage were lacking.
The committee also recommended that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulate the use of sildenafil, the active ingredient in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The FDA advisory committee on erectile dysfunction was led by Dr. Josephine Beilock, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, and co-chair of the FDA panel, and Dr. John Pappas, MD, director of the FDA’s Division of Emergency Medicine.
The panel noted that the risk of heart attacks and strokes was not being established and that patients with heart disease were not recommended to use sildenafil.
The FDA advisory committee also noted that there was no evidence of an increased risk of heart attack or stroke in people with pre-existing heart conditions such as heart failure, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The committee also recommended that the FDA regulate the use of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, as the drug was not approved for that use.
The FDA committee also noted that the FDA has not approved the use of sildenafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Dr. John Ludden, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine, said that the committee’s recommendation was in response to the FDA’s own review of a large, multicenter trial that showed that sildenafil reduced heart attacks and strokes.

But the generic is not the only ED drug in New York City. And Pfizer said it would have to prove the drugs were safe when they're sold over the counter in the city.
"We'll definitely have to have a clinical trial of Viagra over the counter," said Pfizer spokesman Charlie Jenkins. "Our sales force is there to help."

The company said that many other companies will also be using the drugs, with more of the latter being developed.
Pfizer spokeswoman Elizabeth S. Cunha said the company was looking at a generic version of Viagra.
"We are hoping for a generic drug with the same active ingredient," she said.
